Since the first publication of the ISO 9000 series of standards in 1987 three adaptations have been made and new standards have been developed like sector specific standards (for instance ISO TS 16949), standards for environmental management systems (ISO 14000), safety and work environment (VCA, OHSAS 18000), food safety (HACCP, BRC, SQF, ISO 22000), social responsibility (SA 8000) etc. There seems to be no end to standards and certifications / registrations.

QS Consult is specialised in quality management systems. We limit our activities to ISO 9001 and ISO TS 16949 and the integration of quality management systems with other management systems.

Let's be frank: a large number of companies set up a system because their customer(s) demand a certificate! There is nothing wrong with conforming to customer demands so this is a valid argument to start with it.

However, if you have to do it, why not do it in a sensible way allowing you to get the maximum out of the system. There is a golden rule: the system is there to help you improve your business, not to please an auditor. In many business sectors all major players are ISO 9001 registered. Customers select their suppliers by comparing quality, service and cost. A complicated, expensive and very rigid management system will be a burden rather than a support.

With the release of ISO 9001:2000 more emphasis has been put on effectivity and efficiency and less on procedures and paper work. This is a positive evolution, even though certification audits can still improve further on these issues.
