Six Sigma

PostDateIconMonday, 02 November 2009 01:00 | Print E-mail

Very rarely a method for quality improvement has gotten that much attention in such a short time as Six Sigma. Maybe a little too much attention because an atmosphere was created as if Six Sigma would be the one and only way to be succesful. The first hype – that we have seen for ourselves in the United States - seems to be behind us and currently more common sense is used in the evaluation and application of Six Sigma.
The excessive marketing was not really needed. The method is strong enough in itself and is based on very sound and very well known principles of quality:

  • Improving quality means reducing variation.
  • We use a project approach to create a breakthrough improvement in processes that are critical for our customers and / or for the bottom line.
  • Using the right tools at the right moment maximises the chances for a successful project.

Six Sigma has translated these principles in a new scale of quality, a structured project mangement system in phases and a toolbox related to these project phases.

In the figures below you find the statistical definition of a process with a quality level of 6 sigma (corresponding to 3.4 parts per million defectives) and a graphical presentation of the projectapproach (DMAIC).

There are some myths surrounding Six Sigma and that is why more than ever the statement below is important.

PostQuoteklAdapt, do not adopt.

QS Consult is convinced that many companies can get major benefits from Six Sigma, if they implement it in a good manner and integrate it within their overall strategy for improvement. In the section “Lean Six Sigma” we give some details on the integration with Lean.

QS Consult has been active within the field of Six Sigma for about ten years now. Through our numerous contacts with the United States we have seen the possibilities of the method early on.We have developed training programs for the various knowledge levels of Six Sigma and have continuously updated and improved them. Over the years we have been stressing practical applicability without loosing sight of theoretical concepts.

PostQuotekl You have to make everything as simple as possible but not more simple.
