Practice-based Statistics

Statistic is a very important science because it can be applied in all fields, from industry through medicine to psychology. Unfortunately there is still a lack of knowledge within most industries about elementary statistical methods and how they can contribute to a better understanding of processes.

QS Consult also offers a course on fundamental but practice-based statistics that can be tailored to customer needs. As a basis for discussion we start from the following content:

  • Theory of variation
  • Data types
  • Operational definition
  • Stratification of data
  • Sample and population
  • Requirements for a representative sample
  • Characteristics of variable data

  1. Location: mean, median, mode
  2. Variation: range, variance, standard deviation

  • Graphical representation of a dataset

  1. Histogram and Boxplot

  • From sample to population
  • The Normal Distribution

  1. The Central Limit Theorem
  2. Determining sample size
  3. Use of the z-table
  4. Confidence interval

  • Characteristics of attributive data
  • The Binomial distribution and the Poisson distribution

  1. Difference between defects and defective units
  2. Effect of sample size on accuracy

This program can be expanded with:

  • Tests of Hypothesis
  • Analysis of Variance (ANOVA – one way, two way)
  • Linear regression and correlation
