Management systems

In 1991 I started helping companies building their quality system and having it certificated to the then valid version of ISO 9001. With version 2015 we have seen four revisions so far. In addition, during that period a lot of new standards have been developed like sector specific standards (ISO TS 16949 – automotive; AS 9100 – aerospace; …), standards on environmental management (ISO 14000), safety (VCA, OHSAS 18000), food safety (HACCP, BRC, SQF, ISO 22000), social responsibility (SA 8000; ISO 26000) and so on. There seems to be no end to the generation of management systems standards.

QS Consult specializes in quality and quality management. Therefor, we limit our activities to standards on quality management systems and the integration with environmental management systems according to ISO 14000.

Certification of management systems

It is clear that a large number of companies have a certificated quality management system because they are forced to have this by their customers. There is nothing wrong with complying to customers demands, so there is no shame in having this as the main reason for certification. But if you have to do it, you might as well do it sensibly and get extra advantages from it. The golden rule is: the system is there for the benefit of the company. Don't forget that once your competitor is also certificated you have lost this advantage and a customer will select you as a supplier in function of your quality, service and price. A heavy, bureaucratic and costly system will not help you in this competitive struggle.

With the release of the ISO 9001:2015 version the integration of systems is facilitated, there is more emphasis on leadership and less on documentation and the focus is even more on effectivity, efficiency, process approach and results.

Integration of management systems

QS Consult is a big advocate for maximum integration of management systems. There are many advantages:

  • Less documents so a simpler management of documented information.
  • An integrated management system is more seen as the system of the organization rather than the system of a department (what is all too common with quality management systems).
  • It promotes a more global and integrated thinking about the company and it avoids that requirements are in some sort of trade-off against each other. We need to work with high quality, high productivity a and in an environment friendly way.

QS Consult courses on management systems

QS Consult organizes courses on the ISO 9001:2015 standard and on sector standards ISO/TS 16949 and AS 9100. But these are turbulent times because both ISO/TS 16949 and AS 9100 are currently being reviewed and will probably be released in October 2016. The automotive sector standard will no longer be an ISO standard but will be published as IATF 16949:2016. There will be a close cooperation with ISO.

As a consequence of these changes we currently do not offer training courses on sector standards. As soon as we had the chance to study the new standards and have turned them into a training package we will pick this up again. We will inform you about the status through this website. Also, courses on some of the obliged quality tools within the automotive standard are continuously offered. For more information on that, please check the section on Quality Tools.
