There are many methods for structured problem solving. Going from PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) over Global 8D (8 Disciplines) to DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyse–Improve–Control) and then we still leave out plenty. In all these methods the critical element is finding the causes of the problem but the applied tools in general are independent of the nature of the problem.
QS Consult has developed its own methodology to deal with individual problems but the root cause analysis tools are related to the nature of the problem. We see 3 types:
- Problems that started at a specific point in time.
- Problems that are related to too much variation in the process.
- Irregularly appearing problems - on/off situations.
By determining the type of problem the solution wil be found much faster. The general approach is shown in the flow below.
